The grown son of Francisco Gómez Robledo mentioned was a natural son, Antonio, twenty-eight years of age, single, having a robust body, plump beardless face and thick black hair. In 1663, his father had declared him, then five years old, and a sister María, five or six, as his natural children.

As for Antonio, a guess of Fry Ángelico Chávez [the author], is that he was the son of a López del Castillo woman; that he had certain natural children by Juana Luján at Guadalupe del Paso, 1681-1693, and these came to New Mexico as "Gómez del Castillo" Moreover, they were very close to the Roybal-Gómez Robledo clan in the Pojoaque area).

Early in the century there appears the mysterious family of Gómez del Castillo: Francisco, Juan, and Luisa, all children of Juana Luján, daughter of Matías Luján and Francisca Romero, who had a prosperous homestead near San Ildefonso, including Apache and other Indian servants. These three children were already adults in 1732, sometimes called "Luján," but mostly "Gómez del Castillo," a name which became permanent. In her last will in 1762, their mother mentioned her marriage to Francisco Martín, by whom there was no issue, then declared the three Gómez del Castillo as her carnal children and heirs.

The mystery arises, not from the mere fact of illegitimacy, but because there was no "Gómez del Castillo" family in New Mexico before or during this time. What seems very likely is that Juana Luján had her three children at Guadalupe del Paso by Antonio or Bartolomé Gómez Robledo, sons respectively of Francisco and Bartolomé Gómez Robledo by some López del Castillo woman; for Juana Luján and her children were very close to the family of Ignacio Roybal, whose wife was a Gómez Robledo.
