Matthew, son and heir of Godfrey de Lovaine, was one of those barons summoned to a parliament convened to meet in London, by writ dated 18 Oct 45 Henry III. He died shortly after in 1261 (46 Henry III). He left a son and heir also named Matthew.

Matthew de Lovaine, son and heir, took homage for ten knights' fees held in chief, on 26 Apr 1226. His uncle, Henry, Duke of Lothier and Marquis of the Roman Empire, confirmed to him the custody of the honor of Eye, as his father Godfrey had held. Matthew also held ˝ knight's fee in Yorks of Roger de Mowbray. In Jun 1242, he was summoned with horses and arms to join the King at Saintonges.

Matthew de Lovaine married a woman named Muriel, whose parentage is not known. He died before Jun 1258, when his widow was plaintiff in a plea concerning land in Essex. Muriel, his widow is named in a fine in Essex in 1263, and in 1267, she obtained a charter for a weekly market and yearly fair at Drinkstone, Suffolk. Muriel was still living in 1275.
