Francisco Xavier Chaves was baptized 3 Apr 1769 at Isleta with padrinos Manuel Gallegos and Gertrudis Tenorio. He married Ana María Álvarez del Castillo, daughter of Joaquín Jacinto Álvarez del Castillo and Anna María Andrea Vallejos, on 24 Sep 1799, at Tomé. Francisco was thirty-one years of age and Ana María was fifteen. Francisco Xavier Chaves became governor of New Mexico on 5 Jul 1822 when the Mexican Republic was established.

Francisco Xavier Chávez, son of Tomás Chávez and María Josefa Padilla, married Ana María Alvarez del Castillo, 14 Sep 1799. They were living at Los Padillas in 1803. He became Governor or Jefe Politico of New Mexico, 5 Jul 1822, upon the establishment of the Mexican Republic, succeeding the last Spanish Governor, Don Facundo Melgares.

His family, according to the records, is as follows:
