Tomás Durán y Chaves was baptized on 20 Dec 1737 at Isleta with padrinos Francisco Chaves and his wife, Luisa. He married María Josefa Padilla, daughter of Rancisco Padill and Isabel Baca, on 20 Ocet 1759 with pardrinos Juan Domingo Baca and María de la Luz Baca.

Tomás and his family can be found in the 1790 Spanish Census for the Plaza of San Andrés de los Padillas in household #486. He is listed as age fifty-four and a rancher. His wife, María Josefa Padilla is listed as being fifty-one years of age. Their sons given are ages twenty-six, twenty-five, thirteen, eleven and seven. Their daughters ages are given as twenty-nine and seventeen. They also had their niece, age thirteen, living with them.

They were living at Los Padillas in 1790, he a stockman fifty-four years old, and his wife, fifty-one. They had five sons ages 26, 25, 13, 11 and ?; and two girls ages 27 and 17.
