• Background Information: 1541
John Watson of Holme-on-Spalding-Moor, whose will, dated 3 Aug 1521 , was probated 11 Mar 1522 [Prerogative and Exchequer of York Wills, vol. 9 fol. 212]. He directed that he be buried in the churchyard of Allhallows at Holme, provided for his wife and children and named his wife Margaret and eldest son John Watson as executors. The witnesses were Sir Thomas Mownder (probably a cleric), Robert Sotheron, George Brigham and Willm Granger. His wife was still living in 1528 when she appeared on the Rent Rolls of the Manor of Holme as holding "in the Water End a messuage formerly of Thomas Westeby, a barn, a bovate of land, an acre of meadow in the Twelve Acres and Le Blanch farm, a parcel of meadow called Ferested, a close called Brakan Close abutting against Lylly Close, another close called the Waiste abutting on John Pyd's Close, and a flatt in the Smith-fields. Total rental - 37s 9d." The was the largest holding on the roll [Public Records Office, Rentals and Survey Roll 735].
