Ailpín mac Echach was the son of Eochaid, king of Dál Rita. He was the father of the first Baelic king of the united kingdom of the Picts and Scots, Cinaed mac Ailpín, who came to power in 843. Since the name Ailpín is not known in early Ireland, Ailpín may have been of Pictish or Brythonic origin.
