"When his father Duke Richard II died in 1026, Robert was made count of Hiémois under his elder brother Richard III as his share of the inheritance. Less than a year later, Richard III had died and Robert became duke of Normandy. Having set off on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem early in 1035, Robert died at Nicaea during the return trip, and was succeeded by his young son William, later known as William "the Conqueror"."

Guillaume of Jumièges names "Richardum...atque Robertum et Willelmum" as the three sons of "dux Richardus" and his wife "Goiffredum Britannorum comitem...sororem...Iudith"[Willelmi Gemmetencis Historiæ (Du Chesne, 1619), Liber V, XIII, p. 255]. Ademar names Robert as brother of Richard [209]. Guillaume of Jumièges records that Richard II Duke of Normandy, on his deathbed, confirmed the succession of his son Richard and granted "comitatui Oximensi" [Hiesmes] to "Robertum fratrem eius"[Willelmi Gemmetencis Historiæ (Du Chesne, 1619), Liber V, XIII, p. 257].


Robert married Herlève de Falaise, daughter of Fulbert de Falaise and Unknown. (Herlève de Falaise was born about 1003 in Falaise, Calvados, Normandy, France,160 died about 1050 160 and was buried in Abbaye St. Gre.)
