A young woman named Inez lived with her grandmother, Apolonia Varela, in Santa Fe. She had a brother named Juan, who was a silversmith. These two were, in all likelihood, the children of Juan González Bernal II. Her brother would then bee Juan Gonzálea Bernal III, or as he, his brothers and his sisters later called themselves, "González Bas." Brother to this Juan II was Diego, who married María de Benavides.

Diego González, of the Bernal group, resident of Santa Fe and then of Santa Cruz in the same year, 1698, was twenty-four or twenty-five years old, and a native of New Mexico. He is, to all appearances, the Diego in whose house Melchora González was living in 1704. In 1702 he bought land in the vicinity of Chimayó, and in the following year he was an Alférez of the militia. His wife was María de Benavides. Her husband was dead by 1736 when some of their children are mentioned. These were Juan Angel, married to Antonia Durán y Chaves, Diego II (their mother had married Tomás de Vargas), Leonardo, and Teodora, wife of Antonio Garcia.

Diego González Bas married María de Benavides on April 30, 1696, when he was 23 and she was 14. His brother Juan and wife María López were the witnesses (DM, 1696, no. 19). Their daughter, Teodora, married Antonio García in 1718 (DM, 1718, no. 18).
